Filthy NewswireHere are some news stories straight from the wire ... Hi - Update from Abu Dhabi |
(Brett, 03-19-08, 18:18:59)
yes - Abu Dhabi is where I now reside and work. Its an Arabic and Islamic culture, very little biking. This site, albeit from another time and place that is most definitely not the UAE, is still fully functional. I don't update it that often but it still serves as the main link for MTB in Korea. Contact details for the guys are still the same, I think. Enjoy. B |
Indy Festival Phonenix Park Summary of Events |

Race results for the ODBIKE DH race team-
1/ Female DH - first place (Danice racing under ODBIKE banner)
2/ Male sports Downhill First place (Drew), second place (BC Kev) and 4th place (Mike Greer). Me - I don't know yet. 8th? 10th? Last?
3/ 4th place in North Shore event. (Bee)
4/ 3rd place in combo team event (uphill ride, uphill run, Downhill)(Drew and BC Kev)
5/ 2nd place (Bee) in really embarrassing dancing competition on Saturday night on main stage in front of everyone.
6/ 5th place (we think) Brad in the sketchy night-time Four Cross event. Danice wa the only female and made it into the final 16. She was in first place in her next race but crashed splat on the first wide gap jump.
EXCELLENT results. Boys and girl happy and great promotion for ODBIKE. Thanks Paul and Jay
The winnings:
1/ New snowboard
2/ rollerblades
3/ sunglasses
4/ THREE new freeride bike frames. Two HT and one Full suspension
5/ set of pannier bags
and other shit I have forgotten
Bought:
1/ about 12-14 authentic RACEFACE riding shirts and shorts (for 10 000 won a piece!!!)
2/ tow truck ride to Wonju 24 hour car center.
40 000 won.
3/ a new disc for the jeep's transmission which blew out on the way home.
300 000 won
4/ a tow truck to Seoul for the second jeep mechanical.
200 000 won
Still to buy - a new alternator -
180 000 won.
1/ The DH course - a wet and sloppy wench on Saturday. But Sunday - after strong winds - an absolute flying 8-10 minute flying HOOT!!
2/ The four cross - the start was pretty sketchy and huge pileups took place. Brad did really well and came 5th (we think). Well done but no banana
3/ 3 meter drop. Pretty sick but doable. I thought about doing it on my HT azonic then thought better of it after my last azonic breakage.
4/ 5 meter drop. Really sic. DJ - the Korean guy who did it. BIG balls. Very Josh Bender like. Meaning he crashed both but walked away afterwards.
5/ Combo team event. ODBIKE guy did the ride uphill and came in 7th, Drew did the run and came in 5th. As soon as I saw him coming up the hill I took off on the Downhill. Drew tagged Kevin who was the official DH racer who then proceeded to chase the flying Kiwi fat assed "rabbit" down the DH course. Kev passed me about a third of the way down and also passed two other riders. I passed one other rider in my attempt to catch up with the speeding Kev. Fun fun FUN!!
6/ North Shore event. Two identical man made courses running parallel. Riders raced against each other. Twisty turnie woodwork ranging from about 1 foot off the ground to 6 foot. With one 5 foot long skinny and three big teeter tooters to finish. Boys were riding it FAST. I missed the seed race and was about 4 cold beers into the day so I crashed ten times in the practice much to the amusement of the crowd. Quite surprized I came fourth in the race actually. Lotsa fun and quite the crowd pleaser event.
All up a great weekend (best MTB festival I have been to in Korea) except for last night's mechanicals. We all got home at 5 am fuck!! |

Endless Biking
This month we have an interview from one Ken Maude. A very well-known and very respected rider on the North Shore who has featured in a few of the famous free-riding movies. I like to get interviews with guys like this because they really know what the scene is all about. They LIVE biking. They were there at the beginning and, more importantly, are still there. Guys like this truly understand what the sport is really all about and where it came from. We can learn a lot from them and their attitude toward it. Respect.
By the way, before you read on…. next month I hope to translate an article on the Filthies that is currently in BIKE magazine (December issue). This is big news for the Korean MTB scene. Korea via the “Filthies” is now officially on the world freeriding map. Woohoooo!
Brett: Ken
Ken - thanks for agreeing to answer some questions about BC biking. Kev - a 'Filthy' riding buddy of mine here suggested you’d be the man to talk to. That you have quite the experience with the whole scene there in BC so I am hoping you can help let Korea know what its all about.
Firstly - who exactly are you? What's your history in BC freeriding? And, more importantly, why should Korean mountainbikers and sexy mountainbiking women be interested in reading about you ?
Ken Maude: No problem, and I am glad I can help you out.
My claim to fame would have to include that I really am one of the original North Shore Freeriders, since 1988 I have riding the ‘gnarl’ (difficult terrain) that has made this region famous.

Korea from a North American perspective |

Korea – from a North American Perspective
Four weeks recently in Australia and New Zealand on summer vacation and now I’m in New York. Too cold here to ride though. While I was down in New Zealand there was nothing too exciting on the riding front. However I was lucky enough to meet the young Scarlet Hagen, ex-junior Women’s World Champion downhill. A young woman who I believe in the next year or two will become the next world DH champion. Hopefully more details on this very fast, young New Zealander next month. Watch this space.
This month I have a few excerpts from an article in the very well known US bike magazine. Funnily enough it’s called BIKE magazine. You might know it, you might not. The article is written by Stephen Wilde. www.stephenwilde.com The article is on the ‘Filthies’ and free-riding here in Korea as well as some riding by me and a few friends in Taiwan and Canada. I’ve modified a few sentences to help make the translation into Korean a little easier. His style of writing is a little different from mine. Hope you like it…

“Brett knows Kevin, who grew up a few hours from the little town I grew up in. And I know John from Taiwan. And then I met a guy named Jay from the Slope Sistair competition while I home last year from Taiwan. And he knows Danu and Arthur. And Arthur knows Annie who was the girlfriend of Kevin, who Brett knows, and that’s how I met Danu and Arthur because Annie rode with us (on the North Shore) when Brett was in Canada. And I met Brett from Korea when he came to Taiwan and then John came to Canada to ride and he met Danu and Arthur and of course John knows Brett because John and I went to Korea to ride bikes…
And now I lean hard on my pedal and ease my HUKK bicycle down into the snarls of busted rock below behind Arthur and with John close on my heels,...
